What documents do I need to rent a car?

To rent a car, you will typically need:

  • A valid driver’s license (must have been held for at least 1-2 years, depending on the rental location).
  • A credit card or debit card for payment.
  • A passport or other government-issued ID (if renting in a foreign country).
  • Proof of address, if requested.

Can I book a car in advance?

Car Hire / Driver Requirements & Responsibilities

What are the minimum requirements to rent a car?

To rent a car, drivers typically need to meet the following requirements:

  • Age: Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old. In some cases, the minimum age may be 25, depending on the location or car type.
  • Driver’s License: A valid, full (non-provisional) driver’s license that has been held for at least 1–2 years. International drivers may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) if their license is not in English.
  • Credit or Debit Card: A credit card is usually required for the security deposit. Some locations accept debit cards, but this may vary by rental agency.
  • Passport or ID: If renting in a foreign country, you may need to show a passport or additional proof of identification.

Can I rent a car if I’m under 25?

Yes, drivers under 25 can rent a car, but they may face additional charges known as the young driver surcharge. Rental companies often impose these fees for drivers between 21–24 years old. Certain vehicle types may also be restricted for younger drivers, such as luxury cars, SUVs, or larger vehicles.

Can someone else drive the rental car?

Yes, but additional drivers must meet the rental company's requirements. You can add one or more extra drivers to the rental agreement, but they must:

  • Be of the required age (usually 21 or older).
  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Be listed on the rental agreement.
  • Pay any additional fees for extra drivers (if applicable).

Be sure to inform the rental company about any additional drivers at the time of booking or upon pick-up to ensure they're covered under the rental insurance.

What happens if I let someone else drive the car who is not listed on the rental agreement?

If an unlisted driver operates the rental car, the rental agreement may be voided. This could also result in the driver being personally liable for any damage or accidents, and the insurance coverage may be invalid. Always ensure all drivers are officially added to the rental agreement to avoid penalties and issues with insurance.
